Pioneers Of Film

Thomas A. Edison

On February 11th 1847 Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan, Ohio. At the age of 7 Edison and his family moved to Port Huron, Michigan where Tom put together his first chemical laboratory in the basement of their modern fond home.

It was said that Tom only attended his school for a total of three months he was ambitious and curious about the world, as he was getting older at that young age he knew the world was much bigger than it seemed. So in the same year Tom left school and began to sell newspapers on the grand trunk railway, he devoted a lot of his time on each experiment together with printing presses and electrical and mechanical apparatus. Later on Edison would have come to learn and mastered a new and different of science, a type of science not everybody was familiar with at the time. Which was ‘Telegraphy’ the skills he obtained led him to start working as a Telegraph Operator which took him across the country at such a young age.

It was while Tom was working as a telegraph operator he made his first discovery. What he discovered was that if he allowed the telegraph to repeat itself it’ll send on a message that will be transmitted automatically over a second line without the presence of an operator. Unlike any of his colleagues tom strived in his work, spending the majority of his time on his research and experiments wanting to change the world through his inventions. Edison later on in that year settled down in Boston with a secured job.

When he turned 21 he moved to New York City without a dime in hand he was still able to show telegraph company ‘Gold and Stock’ his excellent work. After being able to make a good impression on the boss after miraculously fixing a broken down machine. In result he earned a total of $300 a month as he greatly improved the companies apparatus and service and to no surprise he devoted the rest of his spare time working on new inventions. One of his most successful inventions ‘The Universal Stock Ticker’ generated rapidly around about ‘$40,000’ from its sale. And with toms newfound wealth he moved to Newark where he manufactured many stock tickers. And remained until 1875.

At face of film industry, he has been noted down his history as one of films greatest pioneers. And will always be remembered for his illustrious inventions. The age of 29 he carried out his most important work to come, he devised an automatic telegraph system that allowed it to move at a greater speed and range of transmission. Two years later Edison was to discover what would be known as one of his greatest inventions ‘The Incandescent Electrical Light Bulb’ motivated by the work of Marey and Muybridge Edison it inspired him to become greater and invent much more effective equipment. With Dickson’s helping hand, together the Kitnetoscope was developed, a device that treated you to a minute or so of moving pictures. It was first viewed at the ‘Brooklyn Institute Of Arts And Science’ were the audience was fascinated by its work. One of many films made for the kinetoscope was “Record of a Sneeze made in early January.

During his life Edison made over a thousand inventions, which rocked the

Thomas A. Edison passed away at the age of 84 in 1931.

Lumiere Brothers

Auguste and his brother Louis were two well brought up technically minded boys who were the sons of portrait painter Antoine Lumiere. At a young age father Antoine knew his sons were no ordinary boys. And as they succeeded in their science subjects Antoine sent them to a technical school to resume their studies.

Later on in the year their father Antoine abandoned his art work and set up his own business of manufacturing as well as supplying photographic equipment and at a very young age Louis showed his interest in his dads company showing his determination he spent most of his experimenting on his dads equipment and it was there he first revealed the ‘dry plate’ it became later known as ‘Etiquette Bleue’ at the age of 17 Louis gave his dads company a boost in reputation and as a result a factory was made to manufacture the plate.

In 1894 August and Louis had a goal of overcoming the problems and limitations of the previously successful Kinetograph as they worked through the winter they found out two main problems with Edison’s device: firstly the model was too big and secondly only one person could view it at a time. Combining a camera with a printer and projector the brothers invented their own device which they named ‘Cinematographe’ it was much smaller than Kinetoscope, The brothers used a film speed of 16 frames per second it meant less film was used as of a result.

On December 28th 1895 the brothers showed their device to the rest of the world and they were astonished by their work. They went on to make many more films in the 1800s
